PORTLAND – John Weekes, Principal in the IBI Group Portland office, has been elected to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

“John’s exemplary leadership has advanced the national dialogue by challenging traditional boundaries between education and place,” said David Cartnal, IBI Group Director. “He has been a constant advocate for educational architecture that captures the power of design to inspire. His core values are rooted in the conviction that education is a cornerstone of our democracy.”

“His most celebrated solutions have been new buildings and whole campuses,” added David, “but he has also transformed existing, archaic buildings into 21st century state-of-the-art learning environments that express both sustainability and the joy of learning as benchmarks of transformational activity.”

John is a founding principal of Dull Olson Weekes Architects (DOWA), based in Portland, Oregon, and acquired by IBI Group in 2011.

His many educational design projects include the award-winning Sandy High School near Portland; Parkrose Middle School, High School, and Community Center; the Aquatic Center, Valley View, and Centennial Middle Schools for Snohomish School District; Canby Applied Technology Center; Rosa Parks School and New Columbia Community Campus; and the Gladstone High School and Gladstone Center for Children & Families.

John has also been a key advisor for the New York City Department of Education’s School of One Project.

In addition to membership in the AIA, John has been active in the National Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) Foundation, where he currently serves as president; the Council of Education Facilities Planners International; the US Green Building Council; and the National Coalition for Green Schools.
